Ultimate Camping Packing Checklist With Crying Dogs And Barking Babies

Since I was five, I’ve been going camping with my family. I was one of four siblings, and we’d meet up with our cousins – also around the same age. That made for eight chaotic children and four weary adults. These trips are still some of my best memories.

How I Became a Packing Expert (Sort of)

I used to help with packing too, which basically makes me a qualified camp packer, with 23 years of experience. We’d usually start a couple of days before the trip – though more often it was the morning of, thanks to my parents’ laid-back attitude and general aversion to planning. We’d scribble down a list of everything we wanted to bring, and then race around gathering it all.

My parents also had us pack our own bags of clothes and entertainment. Of course, that meant one year my younger brother showed up with no socks, and no jumper or coat! I just copied my older sister; she never forgets anything.

A Camping Checklist for Real Families

I’ve now put together a comprehensive camping packing list, designed specifically for a family trip that includes both a baby and a dog.. Obviously you can amend as needed! Whether you’re an experienced camper or planning your first trip, this list should save you some time and brain power.

💡 Not everything on the list is essential, and that’s okay! Most people don’t go camping for a survival challenge – we go to enjoy ourselves.

A comprehensive, multi-column "Complete Camping Checklist" divided into five main sections: Adults List (per person), Baby’s List, Dogs List, Misc, and Kitchen. Each section contains bullet-point checklists with items grouped by type (e.g., clothes, toiletries, gear).Adults List includes items like:Clothes: hot and cold weather outfits, underwear/socks, swimwear, jumpers, PJ’s, raincoat, flip flops, walking boots.Toiletries: toothbrush/paste, shampoo/conditioner, soap.Baby’s List includes:Clothes: 8-15x babygrows/vests, jumpers, sleepwear, sun/rain protection.Gear: car seat, pram, bouncer, play gym, sling/carrier, bottles.Toiletries: nappy changing bag, vitamin D drops, baby wash, Calpol.Dogs List includes:Essentials: bed/blanket, collar/harness with tag, extendable lead, floor stake, food/water, travel crate.Health: 1st aid kit, tick/worm meds.Extras: toys, towels, poop bags, treats.Misc Section includes:Other essentials: phone/car charger, day rucksack, camping chairs, mat/blanket, pillows, travel cot, first aid kit.Kitchen Section includes:Gear: coolbox/fridge, water bottles, mugs, cooking and eating utensils, pots and pans.Consumables: snacks, coffee/tea, pre-made meals.Cooking: washing up liquid, BBQ/camping stove. All items are accompanied by checkbox bullets to be marked off when packed.

Tips for the Packing Stage

  • Think of it like Tetris. Big/flat/sturdy items first.
  • Always pack snacks, water and a coat where you can reach them, particularly for long journeys but also very handy if you break down.
  • Children are great at getting in small spaces, use that to your advantage.
  • Have an idea in your mind for things you can live without just incase it doesn’t fit!
