DIY Newborn photos: Simple editing tips to elevate your photos

DIY newborn photos

Equipment:

I used a mirrorless camera, and shot in RAW to make editing easier. That being said, pretty much all phones these days have a really good camera so you can still get good results, but editing is more limited.

For the sake of this post, i’ll be sharing how I created the DIY newborn photos in this post!

  • Camera and tripod
  • Blank wall
  • Blanket to lay on the floor
  • My family (because what would a family newborn photoshoot be without this!)

Taking the photos

To take the photos is very simple:

  • Make sure your baby has been fed and well rested!
  • Either use a blank wall or blanket as the background so there is less distraction (I laid Olive down on a blanket for the photos of just her, and the blank wall for ones of us as a family).
  • Use a low aperture to focus on people. A low aperture will blur out the background, giving the photos a professional feel.
  • Set up timer/ask someone to take photos, and snap snap snap

Simple Editing Tips for professional-looking DIY newborn photos

  • Crop – think ‘rule of thirds’ & crop out any details you don’t want (here I have cropped out the radiator).
